When I want to make a DVD of a recording from my 1080i camera (Canon HV10), I have two options:
1. I can import the video in 1080i HDV into iMovie, then compress this into 480i in iDVD; or
2. Set Canon to '480i DV locked' output on it FireWire connection and import it as standard def DV and again use iDVD to compress 480i DV it to DVD format 480i MPEG.
(1), above, takes up more hard drive space as iMovie converts the HDV to some intermediate format with more frames. Also my Mac imports the DV in real time whereas HDV comes in at 3/4 or 1/2 time. Neither of these is not too relevant for me.
What I am interested in knowing is whether there is a some sort of a built-in HDV to DV downversion scheme in HDV format cameras which handles this more efficiently and smoothly than compressing 1080i in iDVD. I tried both in different instances and to my eyes the results are very comparable.

Canon Hdv 1080i Driver For Mac Windows 7
The easiest workaround is to get another Mac running the same version of iMovieHD (iMovie has been able to deal with HDV for several years) along with an external drive. Import the HDV video from the tape to the external drive, dismount that drive and power it down; connect the drive to the Mac you want to edit on, start the drive.
